    The typical 1928 S nickel is softly struck with average to good luster. Unlike the S-Mint nickels of earlier years, this weakness is usually not due to the use of extremely worn dies. It appears that the planchets were not properly softened or the die set distance David Hall: The 1928-S is fairly common in lower circulated grades and somewhat scarce in EF40 and above. It is rare in Gem MS65 condition and extremely rare in Superb Gem MS66. Strike is usually decent for a San Francisco Mint Buffalo.
